Fire Horse | Lunar New Year Art Project

Ready to gallop into 2026 with a Fire Horse Lunar New Year art project?

This year’s zodiac animal, the horse, brings bold energy and determination that go perfectly with exploring fiery colors. Students will paint horses in warm watercolors, add dancing flames, and watch their artwork leap off the page with a simple 3D element.

This year is special, because the combination of the year of the horse with the fire element only comes around once every 60 years. This project combines traditional symbolism with hands-on creativity, letting kids explore warm colors while learning about this powerful zodiac sign.

Whether you’re teaching about Lunar New Year traditions or looking for a vibrant winter art activity, this Fire Horse Lunar New Year art project brings together culture and creativity.

So let’s grab those watercolors and create a horse that’s ready to charge into the new year!

What you'll need:

  • Watercolor paper
  • Watercolors
  • Metallic watercolors or glitter glue
  • Sharpie
  • Paint pens
  • Scraps of cardboard
  • Tape
  • Glue

Fire Horse Lunar New Year Art Project Instructions

Grab two pieces of watercolor paper. On one, paint warm colors. This will be used for the horse.

On the other, paint red or metallic gold, finishing with glitter glue to add even more sparkle!

Once the paper is dry, draw your horse.

Draw fire details. These can be on the mane, the saddle, the tail, wherever you wish.

Add details with paint pens. Consider adding a bit of cool colors, but keep most to warm.

Cut the horse with its fire designs out.

Prepare a bundle of cardboard that will give the horse a little life to appear 3D.

Tape the bundle of cardboard to the background paper, then tape the horse on top of the cardboard.

Add additional pieces of fire to the background paper, further surrounding the horse.
