Bring Novels to Life
Think about your favorite book. Can you picture it in your mind’s eye? What makes it special?
For many of us, a book becomes a favorite when it leaps to life as we read. And as kids make the transition from picture books to chapter books, helping them bring a book to life really enhances the experience of reading!
And that’s where art comes in. We love to celebrate novels with art! Few would doubt that pairing art projects with novels increases the student’s understanding and appreciation of the book. But without a guide or a project planned out, where do you begin?
We are here to help! Read more to learn about our brand new art-based novel study program, The LiterARTure Society, and download your FREE The Wild Robot LiterARTure issue at the bottom.
Let Art be your Guide
Most novel studies or literature guides focus on discussion questions and writing assignments related to the story. But sometimes it’s not clear when to use these questions, or how exactly the writing prompt helps a kid appreciate the book.
What if we let ART guide us through a book study? What would that look like? How would children respond?
LiterARTure leads with ART
LiterARTure Society issues do just that – we focus studying a novel through doing art projects. What fun!
LiterARTure issues break a chapter book into three or four sections, each to be completed in about one week. One full art project is included per section.
Imagine pausing after reading and spending time together working on an art project. It’s the perfect time for discussing what you’ve read.
Discuss in the Moment
Discussing a great book you’re enjoying together while working on art projects sounds lovely, but what do you discuss?
LiterARTure issues have a plan for each section. The adult leading the study prepares and reads what type of discussion goes well with that section, before reading with kids, to keep an eye out for situations to discuss organically as they happen in the book – no need to wait until the end to tackle big topics!
Specific discussion questions are included as well, to use during reading or at the end of each section.
What about Writing?
Let’s not forget to sneak in a little writing practice.
Each LiterARTure issue includes a writing prompt that doesn’t feel like writing to kids. That’s the key to those tricky “reluctant writers.”
Have you watched your child’s hand suddenly break when you ask them to write about a book’s themes or styles?
Instead, we ask them to complete something like an application form for an animal moving to a pond. It won’t feel like a chore, watch them grab that pencil and get to work!
Ready to Make This a Year-Round Habit?
If you love exploring The Wild Robot this way, imagine doing it every single month, with a brand new book, a fresh art project, and a whole new world to dive into together.
That’s exactly what the LiterARTure Society is all about.
LAS is our art-first novel study membership, designed for homeschool families and art teachers who want to bring great books to life, without spending hours planning. Each month, a new issue lands in your member portal on the first, ready to go at your own pace. Discussion, art, writing, science connections, it’s all there, clearly mapped out for you.
Each LAS issue covers one carefully chosen middle grade novel over four weeks, with:
- A full art project for each section of the book
- Discussion ideas to use while you read — no waiting until the end
- A writing extension that won’t feel like writing (we promise)
- Science and thematic connections to take the book even further
New issues arrive each month so your whole school year is covered.
Your way. Your pace. Your family’s next favorite book.
