Can we get a show of hands?
Have you ever harvested a root vegetable? Think of your favorite one for this rowdy root vegetable art project!
If you have a garden or have harvested root vegetables, you know that moment of anticipation when you pull out the potato, carrot, or rutabaga. Will it be big, small? The usual color? Maybe it’ll be a world record breaking vegetable! Only one way to find out.
Kids love the surprise attached to the greens aboveground, and in this rowdy root vegetable art project, we’re letting kids imagine what those tubers are getting up to before they’re pulled up!
This project combines art with science and social-emotional learning. Let’s learn about growing food AND what expressions show us.
In this lesson, students will study the shapes of common root vegetables and their leaves, and then create them using a mix of oil pastels, watercolor, and painted paper, finishing with imagined veggie personalities.
We are excited to say this project is part of an entire FREE bundle of projects: Farmers Market. Grab your copy at the link at the end of the post and see what Glitter Bomb is all about.
Now grab your supplies and let’s head out to harvest!

Rowdy Root Vegetable Art Project Instructions
First, make green painted paper that will later become stems and leaves of your vegetables.
Mix up different tints and shades of green tempera paint, and paint on the green paper with different patterns and lines.
Let it dry.

On the large white paper, draw a line with a brown oil pastel in the middle of the paper to separate the above and below ground.
Use a white oil pastel to draw 2 to 3 root vegetable shapes. Make them large enough to fit a facial expression later.
Watercolor your vegetables with bright colors, and the surrounding dirt with another color. Paint the sky as well, either blue or sunset colors.

Cut out leaf shapes and glue them on top of the vegetables.
Add facial expressions and any other details desired to show what those rowdy root vegetables are getting up to below ground!
Use a brown oil pastel to add other things to the dirt such as dots for texture, worms, and bugs.
