Does this dragon egg art project remind you of a self-portrait? No? There’s a good reason for that.

Self-portraits and “how I spent my summer” projects seem to pop up every year. I’m going to confess something – I really disliked the first week of school because of it.

I always went on vacation, but my closest friends did not. And I watched their faces struggle with the idea that they really had nothing to write other than they played in their backyard, while they listened to the rest of us talk about far away adventures.

And self-portraits? I did not want to draw myself. I never wanted to draw myself. And yet it seemed every year I had to.

So I’m changing it up, everyone. No more self-portraits for the first week of school. (If you do a self-portrait of yourself as a dragon, I will allow it.)

Fire dragon egg. With glitter.

This year can be different! Instead of self-portraits, I present to you: the dragon egg art project.

Markers (I used these), 2 sheets of paper, scissors and glue – that’s it. Best of all, I’ve written the lesson plan in a FREE, and downloadable PDF just for you. Grab your copy below.

PS: Don’t like dragons? Change the dragon egg art project into dinosaurs, reptiles, or birds!

  1. I am considering this curriculum to supplement what I have already created. my district has just released some money for me for curriculum purchases this year. I would like to see some samples of this curriculum to see if it is right for me. I teach K-6 and have 788 students. Please consider sending a few free lessons for me to preview.
    Sincerely,
    Danielle Mock
