Fall Flannel | Autumn Watercolor Art Project

Cozy Up to This Autumn Watercolor Art Project

I’m going to make an unpopular opinion – I’m not into sweater weather. I don’t like the static that builds up on them every single time. And they’re bulky and always seem to be in what I’m eating.

But flannels? I’ll take a flannel any day.

Flannels are like a cozy coat, but one that’s less bulky. I can easily throw one on, without having to throw it over my head and static up my hair. (Can you tell I’m anti-static?)

Here in Michigan the flannels come out as soon as the first leaf turns golden. Everyone is out there with rakes and leaf blowers and their favorite flannel, cleaning up their yard, hiking, or clutching that pumpkin spice latte.

This project screams autumn, and hey, you can also turn it into a Paul Bunyan project. Because here’s a secret – that was the original intention.

But whether you’re thinking blue oxen or autumn leaves, you’ll love how simple this flannel is to create.

Let’s take a look!

What you'll need:

  • 9×12 white sulphite or mixed-media paper (2 sheets)
  • Black crayon
  • White crayon
  • Black oil pastel
  • Watercolors
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick

Fall Flannel Instructions How-To

Start by drawing basic leaf shapes across the page with a black crayon.

Use the white crayon to draw leaf shapes as well, some of them in the negative space (where the leaves aren’t), and some that overlap the black leaves.

Trace around the black leaves with the white crayon.

Paint the leaves in warm colors like yellow, orange, and red.

Then paint the rest of the background with blue and let dry.

For the other piece of paper choose two colors. Paint one color going across the page in stripes. Turn the paper and paint the other color in stripes so that they criss-cross.

Choose a third color and paint narrow stripes in between color one or two. Let dry.

Draw a basic shirt shape using a black oil pastel. Add a U-shape for the collar and connect it to the left and the right. Draw a line straight down and add two small lines on the sleeves near the bottom. Add pockets and buttons.

Smear lightly with one finger.

Cut out when finished.

Glue it down over the background at an angle and you’re done!
