Potted Poinsettia Art Project Freebie

I love having flowers in the house – especially flowers that are difficult to kill. My thumb is far from green, and I respect any plant that can put up with my negligence in plant care and thrive. Poinsettias have repeatedly stood the test of time under my care, and as such, I love having them in my house every year. But what to do with them when the holidays are over?

When I ran across Zetta the Poinsettia, I knew the answer. Zetta is a sweet poinsettia who watches Christmas be tossed out the door, wondering what will happen to her. Will she go the way of the Christmas tree? Or find a different place to bloom?

There’s something about the joy in children’s art that keeps on giving…

Kids will love reading the story of Zetta, and then following it up with this Potted Poinsettia Art Project. Done with watercolors and oil pastels, it’s a project that can easily be done with crayons alone. That means it’s one of those projects that’s perfect for any teaching situation.

And the joy in the faces of these poinsettias is exactly what we need right now. Below are samples from a kindergartener and a 3rd grader. When I received word that a 4 year old had done this the other day, nothing could have made me happier. Lessons that stretch across age groups, that families can do together, and that easily reach and adapt through a computer screen…exactly what I’m hoping for with these freebies.

Make it even more special by adding a symmetrical pot that kids can decorate to their heart’s content using line, pattern, and shape. Or go rainbow, because who can go wrong with rainbows?

If you do this Potted Poinsettia art project with your kids or students, I would love to see! Tag me at @soulsparklettes on IG, or send me a message!

It’s important to add here that the actual name of this beautiful plant is the Cuetlaxochitl, and the “petals” aren’t petals at all, but the leaf of this incredibly beautiful plant. Originating in Mexico, this plant continues to be one of my favorite every December!
